In the training profession, the train-the-trainer certification provided by the International Board of Certified Trainers (IBCT) is recognized as one of the most prestigious available. A key component of earning that certification is successfully completing an academic course on training.
Typically, this is a semester-long university-level course – with one and only one exception- TrainSmart’s 3-Day Train-the-Trainer Certification Program.
Since 2010, The IBCT has recognized that people who successfully complete this workshop meet their eligibility requirements to apply for the IBCT professional certification. Most of the people attending this workshop will apply for either the IBCT Associate Trainer Certification (AT) or the Certified Professional Trainer (CPT) designation.
Once you complete the workshop, you will need to submit some paperwork to the IBCT. Just prepare these documents in a PDF file.
- A photo ID (Driver’s license or passport)
- A scan of your highest diploma
- Your resume
- A Professional Development Plan
- A signed copy of the IBCT Code of Ethics
- A signed application
- A copy of your TrainSmart certificate of completion
Your TrainSmart trainer will handle the rest. You can anticipate receiving your IBCT certification in three to six weeks.
The CPT certification does require additional educational experience. If interested, TrainSmart will provide you with additional requirements.

Your Trainer Certification Journey Starts Here
Throughout this 3-day interactive and engaging workshop you will have several practice opportunities to help improve skills, increase confidence, and deliver a more successful training. Using a topic of your choice, you will work through the design and development process, identify audience needs, learn critical communication skills to engage participants and create activities to enhance learning.
Day three will cumulate into a recorded practice session with feedback and coaching from other participants and your expert trainer.
Train-the-Trainer Certification Outline
Day 1: It Starts with You-Discipline of Design-Audience and Evaluation-Design-Documentation
- Start with a self-assessment to understand current skills
- Define the characteristics of an effective trainer
- Identify the fundamentals of adult learning
- Review the learning process and what are the expected outcomes of a training workshop
- Describe the ADDIE process for developing and delivering training
- Identify methods to evaluate training success
- Create a clear purpose and learning objectives for your training
- Develop an outline that easily flows from topic to topic
- Recognize ethical standards in the training industry
- Discuss techniques to begin a training session that grabs the attention
Day 2:
Delivery and Online Learning Environments
- Develop activities to enhance learning and retention
- Identify best practices to introduce and debrief activities
- Create visuals that clarify and complement learning
- Practice trainer communication skills and techniques to engage learners
- Identify techniques to manage classroom and participant challenges
- Demonstrate methods for reducing nervousness
- Produce a trainer’s toolkit checklist
- Review techniques to deliver virtual training
- Define procedures for delivering individual and on-the-job training
Day 3:
Review and Final Training Project Delivery and Feedback
- Discuss review techniques
- Identify what you’ve learned through self-assessment and a review activity
- Prepare for a final practice activity
- Practice a 10-minute portion of a workshop that will include
- Receive feedback and coaching
- Review Additional Resources
- Discuss the IBCT trainer certification process

What are the benefits of IBCT Certification?
As part of earning the certification, you are entitled to use a “three-letter” designation as part of your signature line. Having a post-nominal is one of the best ways to share with colleagues and potential clients that you have completed the most stringent requirements in professional training.

As a governing body, IBCT ensures that all members possess the ethical standards and professional competence, and independence required and are qualified to practice the art of training.
When you become an IBCT-certified member, your name is included in the IBCT database. This certification is required by several global companies that offer training services to their clients Their Subject Matter Experts are required to be IBCT certified before training with their clients.
In order for this workshop to qualify for IBCT certification standards, it underwent a rigorous review by IBCT executives. The IBCT sets the standards and the competencies required for the workshop. These are in alignment with their University’s multi-week instructor-led program.
